Editing Speaker Names
After transcription, LanEcho automatically distinguishes the different speakers in a recording and labels them “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2”, and so on in the Transcript. Replacing these default names with real names makes the Transcript far easier to read back, and any Smart Summary generated afterwards uses the updated names too — more accurate, and easier to share with participants.
Why Edit Speakers First
- Every paragraph in the Transcript is tagged with a speaker. Default names don’t map to real people, which makes reading and searching awkward.
- Smart Summaries reference speaker names in participants and talking points. Replace default names with real ones first, and the generated summary will be more accurate and more readable.
We recommend finishing speaker edits before generating a Smart Summary. Speaker names in the Transcript update in real time as you save, and Smart Summaries generated afterwards pick up the new names — no mismatched names for the same recording.
Where to Edit
- Open the recording details and go to the “Transcript” tab (a Transcript must already exist).
- Tap the speaker name before any paragraph (an edit icon appears after the name).
- The “Edit Speaker” dialog opens — make your change there.
What you’ll see in the dialog:
| Element | Details |
|---|---|
| Input field | Pre-filled with the current speaker name; edit it directly |
| Contacts icon | To the right of the input field; opens the Lansenger contact picker |
| Hint text | “Enter name or select from contacts.” |
| Quick-select list | Speakers you’ve already renamed in this recording, ready for reuse |
| Checkbox | “Modify all instances of “Speaker X”“ — off by default |
| “OK” button | Saves your change; disabled while the input field is empty |
Method 1: Type a Name Manually
- Type the new speaker name into the dialog’s input field.
- Names can be up to 64 characters and can’t be empty — entering nothing prompts “The name cannot be empty.”
- Tap “OK” to save.
This suits external guests, clients, and anyone outside your organization’s contacts.
Method 2: Pick from Lansenger Contacts
- Tap the contacts icon to the right of the input field to open the Lansenger contact picker.
- Choose the person from your organization’s members — type a name to search quickly.
- Confirm, and the selected member’s avatar and name appear in the input field.
- Tap “OK” to save.
- The picker shows only members of your organization — external users can’t be selected.
- Once a member is selected, the contacts icon becomes a delete icon; tap it to clear the selection and restore the pre-filled name.
- Names picked from contacts stay consistent with the Lansenger directory, which keeps people clearly identifiable in summaries and sharing.
Speaker Quick-Select List
The dialog lists speakers you’ve already renamed in the current recording. If you’ve renamed “Speaker 1” to “Wang Wei” and “Speaker 2” to “Chao Pei”, the list shows “Wang Wei” and “Chao Pei”, ordered by when they were added.
When editing other paragraphs of the same recording, tap an existing name in the list instead of retyping it — one tap keeps the same person’s name consistent.
Batch-Replacing a Speaker Name
At the bottom of the dialog is the checkbox “Modify all instances of “Speaker X”“ (X is the current speaker’s name; off by default):
- Checked, then OK: every paragraph in the recording recognized as this speaker is renamed in one go.
- Unchecked: only the paragraph you tapped is renamed.
For multi-person meetings, check the box to unify all of a participant’s paragraphs in one action. If only a few paragraphs were misattributed, uncheck it and fix them one by one.
Saving and Taking Effect
- Confirm the input field, then tap “OK” (disabled while the field is empty).
- Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed automatically on save, and success shows “Operation Successful”.
- Speaker names on the Transcript page update in real time. If a change fails, you’ll see a failure notice — just edit again.
What Your Changes Affect
- Speaker names on the corresponding Transcript paragraphs update in real time, so playback matches names to voices.
- Smart Summaries and Chapters generated afterwards use the updated names.
- Smart Summaries that already exist are not rewritten when you edit speakers. To bring a summary up to date, edit the names and then use “Regenerate Summary” — see “Smart Summary and Chapters”.
Tips
- After a meeting, read through the Transcript, rename the key participants one by one, then generate the Smart Summary.
- Rename each person only once per recording — check “Modify all instances of “Speaker X”“ to apply it everywhere.
- For internal meetings, prefer picking people from contacts; type names manually for external participants.
- You can re-edit a name anytime — if something looks wrong, tap the speaker name again and fix it.
Limitations
- Recordings in “Shared With Me” don’t support speaker editing: tapping a speaker name does nothing, and no edit icon appears. Ask the recording owner to make changes.
- Editing speakers only changes how names are displayed — the Transcript’s body text is untouched.
With speakers renamed, you can generate a summary with accurate people info — see “Smart Summary and Chapters”. For playback positioning and paragraph highlighting, see “Transcript and Playback”.
